A Guide to College and University: Study in the USA

Worldwide College Tours • Oct 26, 2021

Studying abroad in the USA can be an exciting and rewarding experience! Not only do you have the joy of traveling and seeing a new country, but you also get to immerse yourself in a new culture while pursuing your future career goals through study. However, the process behind applying internationally can sometimes be incredibly overwhelming. There are so many factors involved and it can be a challenge to find accurate and reliable answers. Here at Worldwide College Tours, we understand the frustration behind studying internationally. We have published our guide book, the College Admissions Guide: USA Edition (CAG). This book not only helps guide you through the process, but the information within can also heighten your chances of being accepted into a college or university.

Why Study in the USA?

In the USA, there are over 5,000 post-secondary institutions combined. The majority of these institutions rank high for their quality of education. Included are different types of schools, like:

  • State/Public College and University
  • Private College and University
  • Community College (Junior College)
  • Minority-Serving Institutions
  • Religious Institution
  • Liberal Arts Institution
  • Institute of Technology
  • Graduate School
  • Ivy League School

With so many types of schools, you can look through your options and find a school that is going to align with everything you desire in a college or university, from program, to campus, to location. Whether you want to study Business, STEM, Art, or any other type of field, you will have a variety of options for schools to choose from. In our College Admissions Guide: USA Edition, we explain all the types listed above and include information on what you can expect from them, regarding things such as fees, programs, application expectations, and more.

Financing and Scholarships

One of the concerns students bring up about studying internationally in the USA is the cost. There is more than just the institutions tuition cost, like the cost of supporting documents, additional tests, and everything involved with moving. However, although that is a valid thing to be concerned about, it is important to understand the varying financial aid and scholarships that are offered in the USA. A lot of post-secondary institutions have funds in place that are specifically for international students, including scholarships that cover tuition costs. To find out more, refer to our CAG as it covers all the different financial options, which is great for parents/guardians and guidance counselors as well.

USA Application Requirements

When it comes to your international post-secondary application, you might be expected to complete a Standardized Admissions Test (SAT) and/or an English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). With both, there are many options out there that you may take to fulfill the requirements. Some of them might require you to go to a testing centre, whereas others might have an online option for you to take. The College Admissions Guide reviews the varying options in great detail, covering information such as what each one is, what to expect, how they are scored, how to submit the scores and all other aspects that are relevant to the tests.

Additionally, there are a couple of different visas for international students in the USA that are dependent on what type of study (educational or cultural exchange). The two most common ones for students are the F1 Visa, which is the student visa that allows you to pursue full-time educational studies in the USA, and the J1 Visa, which is a visa based on promoting cultural exchange. If you refer to our guide, beginning on page 67, you will be able to learn what each one is, how you can apply for it, how to renew it, benefits, limitations, and much more. As well, if you have a spouse or dependent, the guide offers you information on what to expect with the different supporting visas for them if they wish to join you in the USA.

Where Can You Study in the USA?

As we discovered above, there are many different types of post-secondary institutions. However, there are also an incredible number of colleges and universities that provide you with excellent education to help further your career. With so many options, it can be hard to narrow it down and decide what one is going to be the best fit for you. Some of the schools we can recommend are:
